We've come now to Touch Base in Seoul. And today we have a pair of returning guests. We first connected with these two young figure skaters a little over a year ago now in October 2021 they were in their first Junior season and had won their first medal as an ISU Junior Grand Prix event. It was in fact South Korea's first ever ISU Grand Prix medal in ice dancing now a little over a year later. They won more medals, including gold and an ISU Grand Prix final silver medal as well, which are of course all firsts in team careers ice dance history. Well first congratulations on the ISU Junior Grand Prix final silver medal, you've had a successful season including winning gold at the Junior Grand Prix in Courchevel France and a Silver medal at the Junior Grand Prix in egna. Italy Hannah start it off. What was it like to qualify for that final event and then when a silver medal as well?

Well, like going into this year and the Grand Prix season. It was our goal to make it to the final so I wouldn't say we were like surprised but we were really happy that we were able to achieve that goal and able to go out and be like the first Asian country or Korean country to represent in the final.

사실 그랑프리 시즌에 임하면서 파이널 진출은 우리의 목표였기 때문에 (파이널 진출이) 놀라웠다고 말하기는 어렵지만, 목표를 이루고 파이널에 진출한 첫 번째 아시아 국가이자 한국 아이스댄스 팀이 되어서 정말 행복했어요.

Sure. And as you said not only the first Korean team the first Asian team to qualify for the Grand Prix final was there any extra pressure when competing Hannah? How did it feel?

물론입니다. 해나가 말했듯이 파이널에 진출한 최초의 한국 팀일 뿐만 아니라, 최초의 아시아 팀이기도 하죠. 여러분에게 중압감이 있지는 않았나요? 해나 선수?

Lim

We didn't really think about being the first Asian or first Korean like yes, we did think about it. But when we were training and competing it wasn't in our minds at all and we were just thinking of Performing and having fun while skating and all the corrections that we had during training sessions.

사실 최초의 아시아 팀, 한국 팀 이런 것에 대해 엄청 생각하지는 않았어요. 물론 우리는 알고 있었지만 훈련할 때나 경기를 할 때 그것이 우리 마음에 있지는 않았고요, 즐겁게 연기하고 훈련 세션 동안 보완했던 부분들에 집중했습니다.

Sure, you said you expected that goal was to reach the final but winning silver that must have been special though Hannah.

Lim

Yeah, it was really special for us because our initial thought going into the final was ‘oh, we made it here’ and our coach was saying this is like a prize. Like for to show your work throughout the Grand prix season and we were thinking that and then when we got the result in the medal, we were really happy about that. It was like a reward.

Sure. And Ye, how did you find the experience weren’t you nervous at all? How was it dealing with the pressure of going to that final?

Um for sure was a little bit stressed like like every competition, but they kinda said we made it to the finals. We're pretty proud to be there to represent Korea in the finals and we just the goal was to do our best and really have fun and being from what we could learn from the experience. Those are really good great.

Right, talking about having fun in the 2021-22 season. You caught a lot of people's attention because you performed to Gangnam Style by PSY which we talked about in your previous interview. You also dance to <don't> by Loco for your Rhythm dance segment and also to selections from the cats musicals for the free dance portion. But this season, I understand that you went for a more classical approach. Ye. Can you tell us about the songs you perform to this year? And how was it decided? Why did you decide to go down this route?

21-22 시즌에 대해 한번 이야기 해보죠. 여러분은 지난 인터뷰에서 말했듯 싸이의 ‘강남스타일’에 맞춘 연기로 많은 관심을 받았는데요. 로꼬의 <주지마>와 함께 (강남스타일을) 리듬댄스에 선곡했죠. 프리 댄스에서는 뮤지컬 <캣츠>를 선곡했고요. 그런데 이번 시즌에는 좀더 클래식한 시도를 했어요. 예 선수, 올해 여러분이 선곡한 음악에 대해 이야기 해줄 수 있나요? 어떻게 왜 선곡하게 되었나요?

For the free dance we chose the Danse Macabre because we were inspired by Yuna Kim from Korea also, she and we really liked what she performed there. So we wanted to try to dance on that music and we really want to choose what can more mature kind of music this year. So to prepare us to transition from our junior year to the senior year and same thing for the the Tango this year. Well this through the Tango was the theme of The Rhythm dance and it was our choreographer that chose the music for us.

Hmm how different was it performing to the new music because you talked about it on your YouTube Q&A you both say it was a different not playing characters yet.

Yeah, it was quite different because normally in the old programs for cats and Gangnam Style, we had a specific character to play. So for example in cats I was like over like obviously cats but we're running more like the main characters of this of the story of the Broadway and Gangnam Style. I was Psy and she was the other girl that was with him. So we had pretty specific characters to play. this year. Danse Macabre about life and death. It's a more abstract how to say like watch abstract theme. So we had to like go a bit more deeper like how we felt about it. How would you present death and life and some stuff like that. the choreographing coaches theater coaches really helped us to like kind of delve into that and like kind of find what works for us. Or and that pretty much what works for us the Tango as well. It felt like we had to go more serious and more intimate. So it's it was like we worked a lot with our Ballroom teacher to just like work on like how to represent this intimacy and the Tango feeling of the dance.

Hannah how did you find the different style that you try to take on this season?

Lim

Um, yeah, like going off what you said. It was more of a mature concept this year and for the free it was He is life and I'm death. So, um, it was at the beginning of the Season. It was really difficult to try and be like, oh what expression does death mean what is like, he's trying to say to life and things like that. So we had like a lot of help from our ballet teacher and our choreographers to help to like kind of make a story about like our characters kind of so it's still a bit character but less than last year. So it's easier for us to portray the expression and in the Tango. Yeah, the ballroom teacher has helped us a lot with the Tango feeling because she's very educated in that topic, so she helps us shape our body for neckline for tango and also with the expression and the arm styling.

말했듯이 올해는 보다 더 성숙한 콘셉트에요. 프리 댄스에서 예는 삶이고 저는 죽음이에요. 시즌 초반에는 죽음을 대체 어떻게 표현해야하는지 어려웠어요. 예는 삶을 표현하려고 노력했고요. 우리 발레 선생님과 안무가 선생님이 우리 캐릭터에 스토리를 만들어내는데 도움을 주셨지만 그래도 작년만큼 확실한 캐릭터는 아니에요. 그래서 사실 오히려 탱고를 표현하는 것이 우리에게는 더 쉽죠. 볼룸 댄스 선생님도 탱고에 있어서 많이 도와주셨어요. 선생님은 그 주제에 빠삭하셔서 우리의 목, 어깨 팔 사용과 표현을 많이 가르쳐주셨어요.

So it sounds like it might have been a challenge but also a chance for you both to develop as dancers as well Hannah.

여러분에게는 어려운 도전이기도 하지만 댄서로서 성장할 수 있는 기회이기도 하군요.

Lim

Yeah, we have learned from last year was more of like sharp lines and hip-hoppy. this year. It's way more classical and the Rhythm and the free so we're slowly taking in the music and trying to move our bodies in a different way than before and connecting with each other. on a way different level than last year.

맞아요. 지난해에는 날카롭고 힙합스러운 것을 배웠다면 올해는 더 클래식한 것을 배우고 있죠. 리듬 댄스와 프리 댄스에서 우리는 천천히 음악에 스며들고 있고 다른 방식으로 우리 몸을 사용하려고 노력하고 있어요. 파트너와 서로 연결된 연기도요. 지난 해와는 다른 수준으로요.

Sure. Ye, do you feel you've improved as a dancers as well? What aspects do you feel like you've improved over the last year?

예 선수도 댄서로서 발전했다고 느끼고 있나요? 작년에 비해 어떤 부분에서 발전한 것 같아요?

Quan

Yes, I do feel like we improved a lot compared to last year, especially like in the The Way We Dance and everything because last year was always just more external dancing to always project to the public. I was just more connect with the public to like your to dance it out but this year a lot more like you have to be more intimate and more like internalize it so that was like a new aspect of dance that we we learned a lot about this year. And yeah, it really feels like it helped us to improve more in our performance.

네. 작년에 비해 많이 발전했다고 느끼고 있어요. 특히 우리가 춤추는 방식에 있어서요. 지난해 우리는 더 외적인(external) 댄스에 집중했고 관객들에게 보여지는 것이 중요했어요. 지난해는 관객과 많이 연결되어있었다면 올해는 좀더 내적인, 내면화된 연기이고 댄스의 새로운 측면을 배우게 됐어요. 우리의 퍼포먼스를 발전시키는 데에도 많은 도움이 됐고요.

And Hannah Ye talks about how you were inspired by Kim Yuna for the choice of music as well. How much of an inspiration has Kim on I've been for your careers.

해나 선수, 예 선수가 방금 당신이 김연아 선수에게 영감을 받아 (죽음의 무도를) 선곡했다고 말해줬는데요, 해나 선수의 커리어에 있어 김연아 선수가 얼마나 많은 영향을 미쳤나요?

Lim

Well when I first started and Freestyle I was always looking up to her and watching her. I remember watching her at the 2010 Olympics and then the 2014 and like we I was always so inspired by the way, she performs and she like does have the jumps but she just skates the whole program as one whole piece of art and really feel emotional watching her skate. And when I actually didn't know about the Dance Macabre program, so then our friend showed it to us and I really like the music but her expression and the way she just moves on that music was amazing, especially in the footwork sequence and we took her footwork sequence of a piece of music and we put it for our Chore Step sequence music and I really was happy that we did that because I feel like we can move like her but we can portray the music in our own way, but I still feel really happy about that.

Sure, she's such an iconic and talismanic figure and inspired so many people and are clearly even she's inspired you both as well Hannah talking more about your personal lives as well. You've been sharing more about your life in recent months through your YouTube channel, which we briefly mentioned earlier and you've developed quite a following you seem to work hard on it as well. You've been putting a subtitles to anything you say in English into Korean and vice versa. You've been a communicating actively with the fans. It seems. what led you to begin your channel and how you found the experience so far.

김연아는 정말 아이코닉하고 특출한 인물이고 해나와 예 선수를 포함해 많은 사람들에게 영감을 줬죠. 해나 선수, 당신의 개인적인 삶에 대해서도 이야기 해보죠. 앞에서도 잠깐 언급했지만 최근 몇달간 해나 선수는 유튜브 채널을 통해 당신의 삶을 공유했어요. 상당히 열심히 하던데요. 영어에는 한국어 자막도 달고 한국어에는 영어 자막도 달고요. 팬들과 소통도 활발히 하는 것 같았어요. 유튜브를 어떻게 시작하게 되었고 지금까지 어떻게 느꼈나요?

I'd say what led me to begin. My channel was I was at the Grand Prix in Courchevel and we were already there last year and I wanted to show all the fun things that we do at competition and how we get ready for competition how much goes into what we do and I wanted to show the fans this so I started filming and When I I always see Vlogs on YouTube and but I rarely see skating well or like sports athletes Vlogs, so I wanted to try that and then when I was putting it together and editing it was really enjoyable because I could just look back on what I just did and be proud of that but also like kind of Reminisce in the memories, so I started making a video and then I put it out and a lot of people enjoyed it and watched it. So since then I've gotten many recommendations on other types of videos to do and then it just keep going up.

제가 쿠르슈벨 주니어 그랑프리에 갔을 때, 사실 저는 거기에 작년에도 갔었고 대회 기간 동안 일어나는 많은 재밌는 일들, 우리가 어떻게 대회를 준비하는지 등등을 팬들에게 보여주고 싶었어요. 저는 유튜브에서 많은 브이로그를 보지만 스케이팅이나 운동 선수들의 브이로그는 잘 없더라고요. 그래서 저는 이걸 시도해보고 싶었고 편집하면서 내가 뭘 했는지 다시 볼 수 있고 스스로 뿌듯해지더라고요. 약간 추억에 잠기는 것 같기도 해요. 많은 분들이 제 영상을 좋아해주셨고 다른 영상 주제 추천도 많이 해주셔서 계속 비디오를 만들어 나갈거에요.

Well, I think the fans really appreciate you as you said taking the fans behind the scenes to see how you guys prepare and what goes into what you do. Meanwhile. Ye, I believe you've been studying Korean the Korean language and learning more about the culture. How's it been for you on that front?

해나 선수가 말했듯 대회 비하인드와 여러분이 훈련하는 비디오를 팬들이 매우 좋아한 것 같아요. 예 선수는 한국어와 한국 문화를 공부하고 있다고 들었는데요. 어떻게 되어가고 있었나요?

Ye

Well for now, like I can't write and read slowly for sure, I'm not super fast yet still working on that but for me, it's most the biggest challenge would be to most have more of a discussion because I'm still having trouble to remember the the meaning of the words I read or write. So yeah, I have to put more more time to remembering the meaning of words.

지금 저는 한국어로 쓸 수는 없고 천천히 읽을 수는 있어요. 아직 그렇게 빠르지는 않고 노력하고 있습니다. 가장 큰 어려움은 대화를 하는 것인데, 왜냐하면 아직 제가 읽고 쓰는 단어들의 의미를 기억하는 것이 어렵거든요. 단어를 배우는데 더 많은 시간을 쏟아야해요.

Sure. I hope you enjoying it and I'm sure you'll pick it up quickly soon as well. Okay, we're running out of time. So let me ask you what you have planned for the year ahead of you. Now. I understand that after this season for the 2023-24 season you'll be competing at the senior level because Ye, you'll be aging out. Is that right? Are you nervous about that or excited? How do you feel?

예 선수의 한국어 공부가 즐겁길 바라고 곧 더 많이 좋아질 겁니다. 좋아요. 시간이 다 되어가고 있어서 말이죠. 앞으로의 계획에 대해 여쭤봐도 될까요? 이번 시즌이 끝나면 23-24시즌에 여러분은 시니어 무대에서 경쟁하게 될거라고 들었어요. 예 선수의 나이 제한 때문에요. 맞나요? 긴장 되나요, 아니면 즐겁나요? 어떻게 느끼나요?

A bit of both I feel a bit nervous because it's a new territory seniors. It's like the big guys out there. So it's it's it's a bigger and it feels like unreal to go there next in that level next to because you see all the senior level skaters at our Academy. That's just just so good and you want to you want to get there, but it really feels exciting to move up to their to their category next year. I'm really looking forward to it.

둘다요. 조금 긴장되기도 해요. 왜냐하면 시니어는 새로운 영역이라서요. 정말 훌륭한 선수들 (big guys)이 있고 더 큰 세상이에요. 약간 실감이 안되기도 해요. 우리 아카데미(Ice Academy of Montreal)에 있는 모든 시니어 선수들과 만나게 될거잖아요. 정말 좋은 일이고 시니어 카테코리에 다음해 올라간다는 것이 신나요. 기대하고 있어요.

And how that do you think you guys will be ready?

Lim

Yes, we'll be ready well. No one ever feels ready ready, but I think we'll work super hard. And since we have those stars and icons with us like live, I think it'll be really motivating to try and work and be a senior like them.
